Here's an update on what is going on nationally and locally in response to Hurricane Florence:

As always, those needing assistance can dial 2-1-1. United Way Worldwide has been in contact with all potentially affected 2-1-1s and are working with them to ensure service continuity. There is also a text response staffed by 2-1-1 agents outside the impact area. Individuals anywhere in the U.S. can now text FLORENCE to 898-211 to receive state-specific hurricane updates and information.

Also, anyone can visit for the most up-to-date public-facing information. We also wanted to let you know that United Way Worldwide is launching a national United Way Hurricane Florence Recovery Fund.

Locally, we know that a shelter is set up at Central Baptist Church of Bearden in Knoxville, and the Red Cross is waiting on the go-ahead to open it (based on evacuee volume).

The Alnwick Community Center (here in Blount County) is also on stand-by for displaced residents who might arrive from the Carolinas.

We also know that the Bristol Motor Speedway near the Tennessee-Virginia line opened its campgrounds to evacuees.

At this time, United Ways in the Carolinas are not accepting supply donations.

We will keep you updated as the response and recovery progresses. I know you join us all in hoping and praying for the best possible outcome.
